Seputar Fisik Buku dan Disainnya

 

 

Buku ini ada yang disainnya putih ada juga yang merah. Sebenarnya isinya sama saja. Hanya beda penerbitnya. Mungkin teman-teman ada yang lebih familiar dengan yang versi disain putih. Saya secara pribadi lebih suka yang ini karena memang tidak begitu menyukai buku-buku dengan sampul yang didominasi warna putih. Ukuran buku yang saya baca sedang, dalam artian lebih besar dari buku paperback umumnya. Dan ini membuat proses membaca jadi lebih nyaman karena ukuran huruf dan spasinya yang juga menurut saya jadi lebih berjarak. Selebihnya saya tidak banyak komentar karena disain buku ini memang khas non fiksi sekali. Dengan menonjolkan nama penulisnya yang populer itu, sudah pasti buku ini seketika menarik untuk dilihat-lihat saat terpajang di display buku.

Opini - Yang menarik dan atau disuka dari Buku ini

Buku ini dibuka dengan catatan langsung dari Malcolm Gladwell yang bercerita tentang kisah sederhana, masa di mana suatu hari Gladwell mengajak ayah dan ibunya menginap di Mercer Hotel yang bonafide, lalu ayahnya mengobrol panjang lebar soal berkebun dengan seorang pria yang tidak ia kenal, yang ayahnya tak terpikirkan pula untuk menanyakan namanya ("Oh, I have no idea. But the whole time people were coming up to him to take a pictures and have him sign little bits of paper), dan Gladwell menutup catatannya dengan pesan jika ada selebritis Hollywood yang merasa telah mengobrol dengan pria tua berjenggot agar mengontak Gladwell segera... I find it funny and witty ☺.

Ini dia maksud dan tujuan buku Malcolm kali ini. Penekanannya memang ada di kasus Sandra Bland yang kemudian menjadi bahan pemikiran yang mendalam terhadap sosial masyarakat.

In all of these cases, the parties involved relied on a set of strategies to translate one another’s words and intentions. And in each case, something went very wrong. In Talking to Strangers, I want to understand those strategies – analyze them, critique them, figure out where they came from, find out how to fix them. At the end of the book I will come back to Sandra Bland, because there is something about the encounter by the side of the road that ought to haunt us. Think about how hard it was. Sandra Bland was not someone Brian Encinia knew from the neighborhood or down the street.

The proposition sounds at first like the kind of hair splitting that social scientists love to engage in. It is not. It’s a profound point that explains a lot of otherwise puzzling behaviour.

Consider, for example, one of the most famous findings on all of psychology: Stanley Milgram’s obedience experiment. In 1961, Milgram recruited volunteers from New Haven to take part in what he said was a memory experiment. Rekomendasi

Buku ini saya rekomendasikan kepada pembaca yang mencari buku tentang kajian komunikasi lintas studi. Baik kasus, data, maupun riset yang dipaparkan menarik dan mendalam. Narasinya mudah dipahami, tapi mengaitkan fakta satu dengan yang lainnya butuh konsentrasi dan agak berbelit-belit. Dilengkapi catatan-catatan kaki. Hanya ada sedikit gambar (foto, tabel, dan grafik). Pada akhirnya kesimpulan isi dan pesan yang disampaikan buku ini mungkin bukan suatu hal yang baru. Bukan pula buku panduan komunikasi praktis.
